Broad Scholar Program

Recipient of the 2008 Lewis Quality of Excellence Award

The Broad Scholar Program is an undergraduate student mentor program initiated in the fall of 1995 to provide more opportunities for first-year business students to work closely with faculty members in the Eli Broad College of Business. This employment opportunity is similar to the Honors College Professorial Assistant Program by offering a monthly stipend and experience working with a faculty member in their college of interest.

Broad Scholars are expected to work an average of 10 hours a week during fall and spring semesters. They participate in a variety of scholarly activities–assisting in publishing articles, data collection, and research. Only a select few are admitted into this program. Students are awarded a stipend of approximately $2,400 for the academic year. They are reappointed for a second year, pending satisfactory performance as determined by the faculty mentor and the program coordinator. An integral part of Scholars leadership and professional development will be available through our student club called the Eli Broad Scholar Organization (EBSO). Meetings, presentations, and social opportunities will be available throughout the year.

  • Develop a relationship with a faculty mentor
  • Gain experience with academic research and/or other scholarly activities
  • Develop a better understanding in major business field

Students must complete an online application. Preference is given to those that meet the minimum eligibility criteria:

  • ACT composite of 28 or SAT composite of 1870
  • High school cumulative GPA of a 3.5/4.0
  • Involvement in extra-curricular activities
  • Proven computer skills
  • Demonstrated research/writing skills

Students will be notified of acceptance to the BSP program in early May.

First year BSP students are expected to live in McDonel Hall, where the Broad Residential Business Community is housed.
